Northern Norway: An Orca Lover's Dream

Northern Norway, particularly the Troms and Finnmark region, is the premier destination for orca watching. From late October to mid-January, this area hosts the world's largest gathering of orcas, drawn by the annual herring migration. Massive schools of herring migrate into the fjords during the winter, attracting orcas that depend on herring as a primary food source. This migration creates a predictable and concentrated area where orcas can be seen hunting and feeding, often alongside humpback whales, with as many as 50-60 orcas observed simultaneously.

The fjords offer deep, sheltered waters ideal for orca hunting. The steep walls and narrow passages help orcas herd fish, and the calm, clear waters enhance visibility. This unique combination of natural phenomena and stunning landscapes makes Northern Norway the best place for orca watching.

We observe the orcas as they feed and play. Whenever possible, we jump in the water and swim alongside them. Experiencing these majestic animals in their natural habitat is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

About Our Expeditions

Orcanorway offers 3-day and 6-day orca expeditions in the breathtaking High Arctic of Norway, from late October to mid-January. As the first company to offer swimming with orca expeditions, we proudly call our trips the "Original Orca Expeditions." Our expeditions focus on swimming and freediving with orcas and other magnificent whales, such as humpback, fin, and occasionally sperm whales.

For the past three seasons, we've proudly maintained a 100% in-water encounter rate with orcas. However, please note that sightings depend on the unpredictable behavior of wild animals and weather conditions.

During your journey, our professional chefs will prepare delicious meals, and our experienced crew will ensure your experience is nothing short of magical. Our boats accommodate 12 guests, primarily in twin cabins. Traveling alone? No problem! We welcome many solo travelers each year, and they often leave with new friends who share their passion for orcas. Many return year after year with their newfound friends.

No diving license is required to join our orca expeditions. While scuba diving is not the primary focus, experienced divers with at least 30 dry suit dives can enjoy evening dives. We provide all necessary scuba equipment on board. For more information, email us at post@stromsholmen.no.

Itinerary

We offer trips as either 6-day or 3-day expeditions. All 6-day expeditions start on a Saturday, while 3-day expeditions start on either a Saturday or a Tuesday. The daily schedule remains the same, with the primary difference being the trip duration. On a 3-day trip, you will spend 3 nights onboard and have 3 days dedicated to swimming with orcas. On a 6-day trip, you will enjoy 6 nights onboard and 6 days for this extraordinary experience.

First Day: Welcome and Preparation

On the day of departure, our bus will transport you from Alta city to the location where our boats are docked. Detailed information on how to reach Alta can be found here. Upon arrival, you will receive a briefing about the upcoming expedition, followed by a delicious dinner and equipment distribution. Typically, we do not leave the harbor until the following morning.

Adventure Days: Orca Exploration

The days begin with a 7:30 am wake-up call, followed by breakfast between 8:00 and 8:30 am. We set sail around 9:00 am to explore the stunning fjords in search of orcas. Whether we spot them immediately or it takes a few hours, each day promises a unique adventure. Please note that our schedule adapts to the changing daylight throughout the season, and weather conditions may affect our departure times.

When we approach the orcas, we switch to dinghies and jump into the water to swim with them. Typically, we spend two to three hours in the dinghies before returning to the mother ship for a break with hot soup and coffee. If conditions are favorable, we return to the dinghies after lunch and continue the activity until dark. As night falls, we navigate towards the closest harbor for an overnight stay. Dinner is served around 6:00 pm.

In the evenings, there will be captivating USEA lectures where you'll delve into the world of orcas and learn how to interact with them in the water. After the lecture, the night is yours to explore the surroundings, witness the northern lights, take a winter stroll, visit the local pub, or relax in our warm wood-fired hot tub.

Final Day: Farewell to the Fjords

On the final day, our quest for orcas continues with one last exciting adventure. After a morning of exploration, the expedition concludes with a delightful lunch. Our buses will then transport you back to Alta, bringing an end to an unforgettable journey.
